The MBTA’s Automated Fare Collection 2.0 (AFC 2.0) project is a transformative initiative to modernize fare payment across the region’s entire public transit system.
The project includes the design, build, finance, maintenance, and operation (DBFMO) of a new, fully integrated fare collection system that enables riders to pay using smartphones, contactless credit cards and other digital platforms. As the MBTA’s first project delivered via a public-private partnership, AFC 2.0 represents one of the largest equity-backed transportation technology investments in the region.
WT served as the Independent Certifier, providing oversight and compliance review throughout implementation. Our scope included contract compliance verification, milestone validation, and ongoing project monitoring to support transparency and alignment with the DBFMO structure. WT’s role helps ensure performance standards are met while facilitating risk-managed project delivery on this high-impact regional infrastructure investment.
