As the major stadium for the 2006 Commonwealth Games, the MCG required significant redevelopment to increase capacity from 70,000 to 100,000 seats.

The redevelopment of the northern side of the ground was undertaken between 2002 and 2006 and incorporated regeneration of about 55% of the ground including the Northern, Ponsford and Olympic stands and the MCC Members Pavilion along with a new members dining room, players change rooms, coach and corporate boxes. The works also included a significant increase to the capacity of the underground parking facilities.

WT Partnership provided comprehensive cost management and quantity surveying services from its earliest conception and preparation of a business case in 1999.

The project was tendered and Grocon Constructors were successful in securing a novated design and construct lump sum contract.

The works were undertaken over five stages ensuring a minimum ground capacity of 70,000 was maintained throughout construction.
