The iconic Melbourne Rectangular Stadium, known as AAMI Park, has capacity for over 30,000 patrons and features a cutting edge ‘bio-frame’ roof which does not require support columns, a design that provides extensive seat coverage and excellent spectator sight lines whilst requiring 50% less steel than a traditionally constructed cantilever roofing system. The bio-frame consists of 20 ‘shells’ which have been skinned with a triangular panelised façade made with a combination of glass, metal and louvers. The external shell also includes 1,544 low energy LED lights, which light up Melbourne each night with colourful sequences. The stadium, which is home to Melbourne Victory and Melbourne Heart soccer teams, the Melbourne Storm rugby league team, and the Melbourne Rebels Super 15 rugby union team includes:

  • A 136 m x 82 m world class rectangular pitch;
  • Sports campus including approx. 800 m2 of training facilities including a gymnasium and internal athletics areas;
  • A four-lane 25 m lap pool;
  • Office space for elite sporting teams and specialist sports medicine including radiology ;
  • 24 corporate suites with internal and external seating;
  • Dining room with capacity for 1,000;
  • Merchandising facilities, 14 food and beverage outlets and 14 bars;
  • Public café/bar and merchandise outlet on Olympic Boulevard.

WT Partnership was engaged by Melbourne & Olympic Parks Trust in 2005 to provide cost guidance during design development and pre-construction cost management including estimating and tender analysis. Our team also assisted Melbourne and Olympic Parks with costing of options prior to construction to increase seating capacity from 20,000 to 30,000+ seats thus satisfying the specific requirements of Melbourne Victory to host their often sold out A-league matches and the demands of the wider sporting community to create a ground which could comfortably host international level competition in both soccer and rugby. Our team also provided post-contract quantity surveying services with the allocation of senior team members to ensure the costs for constructing such a complex design were managed effectively and within the public interest. The iconic nature of the design, the client change of seating capacity post tender and the scale of the project presented enormous challenges to manage the budget. We are pleased to report that the budget was managed successfully. The final result is a an iconic stadium which has been recognised both locally and internationally for its architectural value with the award of of a number of architectural and engineering awards.  WT Partnership was also awarded the 2012 Infinite Value Architectural Excellence Award by the Australian Institute of Quantity Surveyors for this project. View Major Projects Victoria’s video which features AAMI Park’s LED Lights
